This will make Balidogle the epicentre of Turkish-Somali security partnership outside of TurkSOM. U.S. officials stationed in Balidogle are expected to relocate to the Danab base in #Mogadishu. It’s worth noting that the base is primarily run by Somali forces, with the U.S. providing some training. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 Balidogle is the largest airbase in #Somalia. It was established as a military airfield in the 1970s by the government of Gen. Siyad Barre with the support of the #SovietUnion. The base was part of a wider effort by the military government to expand the conventional military means of Somalia & exert air superiority in the Horn. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Balidogle is located in the Lower Shabelle region, approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Mogadishu. It is vital for the defence of Mogadishu and access to contested areas in the South. This important for Ankara as it seeks to expand its military footprint in Somalia as part of a wider security apparatus defending commercial and military interests in the Lower Shabelle region including the new space port underdevelopment. Additionally, the FGS seeks to capture contested areas from al-Shabab and continue to strengthen its position in SWS - the most vital FMS in the South in terms of parliamentary votes & location. It could also allow the FGS to exert influence deeper into Jubaland.
