Steven Crowder Asks a College LGBT President to Define Gender — The Debate Takes a Turn Over “Violence” College LGBT President: People often confuse sex with gender. Sex is associated with biological characteristics, including chromosomes, while gender relates to identity and social norms. Gender isn’t limited to just man and woman. Steven Crowder: But intersex is uncommon. In anatomy class, how many fingers are humans taught to have? College LGBT President: Ten, although some people are born with eleven. Steven Crowder: Exactly. We teach what’s typical while acknowledging exceptions. So, how many genders are there? College LGBT President: You can’t put a number on them because people use different terms to describe their identities. Steven Crowder: I disagree. I don’t believe people can simply choose any gender and compel society to address them that way. College LGBT President: What gender do you think you are? Steven Crowder: I’m male. College LGBT President: I think you’re a woman. Steven Crowder: It doesn’t matter what you think. College LGBT President: Exactly. I identify as non-binary. Steven Crowder: Respectfully, it doesn’t matter. College LGBT President: It does matter. My pronouns affect how I’m treated in society. You should use they/them pronouns for me. Steven Crowder: And what if I don’t? College LGBT President: I’d consider that disrespectful. Intentionally misgendering someone is an act of violence. Steven Crowder: So you believe misgendering someone is an act of violence? College LGBT President: Yes. Trans women, especially trans women of color, face high rates of murder.
